Holding a microphone in his hands, Fernando Torres uttered those words while speaking to some 40,0000 people who, on a cold Sunday morning, got on the train to go to the stadium just to see him put the Atletico jersey on again. There was no game, no free food – just Torres saying thank you very much for welcoming him back. That was it. But everybody left the stadium happy. And Torres left the stadium even happier. He felt loved and, finally, at home.
Liverpool loved him, too. And Torres loved, and still does love, Liverpool. Maybe he does not care for the owners, but he has plenty of love for the fans, club and the city. They adored him, calling him the Kid, and he was happy and played superbly for the Reds.
And Luis Aragones loved Torres. The wise man, the grandpa of the Spanish football, cared for El NiƱo like he was his real grandfather. And Torres knocked out Germany in that Euro Cup final, and Spain cheered his name and they all fell in love with Torres.
Luis left and in came Vincent Del Bosque, who did not love Torres that much. Torres faded away and people said that he was done. Everybody thought that he was finished – except Diego Simeone and those 40,000 loyal-to-death Atletico fans.
People made fun of Torres on social media. "Atletico made a mistake," they said. "We don't care," Atletico fans replied. "He is one of ours and we love him."
And then Thursday happened.
